As a rule, the role of a mental health first aider in the workplace is to be a point of contact for an employee who is experiencing mental health difficulties or emotional distress. This could range from having an initial conversation through to supporting the person to get appropriate help.
Mental health first aid takes the fear out of starting conversations about mental health by improving communication and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify a potential mental illness. It creates a culture that is open to mental health issues.
The mental health first aid qualification is a two-day course that is a regulated qualification accredited through Qualsafe awards who are in turn an Ofqual approved organisation. After successful completion of this course, delegates will receive a nationally-recognised qualification valid for three years.
