The anti-ligature training was originally a course developed for the Probation Service in the North West of England. Now it is delivered nationwide to a range of clients including secure mental health facilities and SEN schools. On successful completion of this training course, delegates will receive a certificate which is valid for three years. The participants are given an opportunity to practice anti-ligature techniques.
To cut a ligature from around the neck, push the blade fully under the ligature bringing the ligature to the centre of the curve on the blade. Then, cut away from the neck and turn directly away from the body with a sawing motion to cut the ligature, pulling away from the body.
Individuals are at greater risk of suicide or self-harm if there are convenient “ligature-risk points” in their surroundings. An appropriate level of ligature risk assessment is carried out for the safety of users and prevention of suicide. A risk assessment will ensure that appropriate advice and action is taken regarding the anti-ligature fixtures and fittings situated in the environment.
